Quadcopter Testing Day

February 10th, 2013

Before I talk about the results of the first official autonomous quadcopter test, I want to state the project goals.  Here’s a video first to show what we’ve accomplished…

It’s Never Easy

January 13th, 2013

So the plan was to make the drones follow a simple lines on the ground, pausing periodically as though planning a next move.  The drone had arrived, as had the Student Version of the Labview software.  Immediately after the thrill of flying this amazing craft had worn off I ran into a significant problem!  The Labview “toolkit” had no way of bringing the video (from the drone’s front or bottom camera’s) into Labview in a way I could use to control the drone.  My Labview gurus had written the platform for AR Drone 1.0  (apparently 2.0 is significantly more difficult), and the native decoding was only available for the first version.

Autonomous Quadcopter Project Continues

January 13th, 2013

OK after a long period of research, the building has begun, in earnest.  I’ve posted a youtube video from the AR drone, but haven’t discussed the steps that led up to the monumental event.  It was, in fact, the result of many many hours of internet research that brought me to the beloved Parrot AR Drone.

AR Drone Autonomous Testing

December 10th, 2012

As part of a new project I am attempting to control the Parrot AR Drone  autonomously.  I’ll provide some more details on the project later.  For now I’m going to celebrate a small victory: controlling the Drone through a Labview example file.  If I weren’t so concerned about breaking this thing I would have tried to navigate it around the room…

For the past two weeks I have been diving into the world of small unmanned aerial vehicles.  Why?  Well why not?  Check out  a selection of my favorite videos:

Guitar Amplifier PCB Project Begins

May 31st, 2012

Above is a schematic for a simple 12-volt guitar amplifier.  I recently simulated this design in Multisim–which came out of Randy Slone’s text Electricity and Electronics–and am having the PCB board manufactured through Advanced Circuits out West.  I am actively looking on Craigslist for an old speaker cabinet to retrofit with this board.  I’ll talk more about the design as this thing progresses a little further.

New Electronics Laboratory is Born

May 20th, 2012

I’m not sure if this picture does justice to the surface of this work bench.  It’s a joy to work on and looks a lot like the clear hemlock sold on the west coast.  With a couple coats of shellac this work bench came out nice.

Tribute to Great Online Tutorials

April 11th, 2012

In this post, I want to pay tribute to those who have shared their knowledge publicly by posting online tutorials.  This medium is a democratizing force for good, and the fact that it’s all given freely makes it all the more brilliant.  There are millions out there on youtube, in all fields and subjects.  The online tutorial has become an art form.  I’ll share a few of my personal favorites:

Autonomous Car Project Gets Underway

March 27th, 2012

This project is part of an assignment for my embedded systems class, and involves two classmates.  In this post I’ll give a basic outline of our goals and post some block diagrams and datasheets for posterity.  Basically, the goal is to build a vehicle that can follow another vehicle autonomously, and all the main components are shown above.

Deconstructing an Inkjet Printer

March 20th, 2012

Those who have ever tried it know: it is not very easy to take a printer apart.  My friend Andrew and I were interested in trying and in extracting the stepper motors for future projects.  The process was informative, involved many unusual tools and some brute strength, and ultimately took a couple hours.  Unlike Andrew, I remained relatively unstained by toner.

Schooled on Solenoids

January 25th, 2012

Solenoid valves are not as simple as you may think. In fact, for the pneumatic display project (described elsewhere) my ignorance was plain to see.

Pneumatic Display Project Begins

January 3rd, 2012

I recently began work with an interactive NYC-based artist (Anoine Catala) on a pneumatically-activated display.  I think it’s an unusual but exciting concept.  For an example see Chris Harrison’s research (http://www.chrisharrison.net/index.php/Research/PneumaticDisplays).   (more…)

Long Struggle with WordPress Site Migration Ends as another Personal Blog Site is Launched

December 27th, 2011

Looking back on this (not complete and definitely still on-going) web design experiment, I’m wonder if it would have been easier finding a free template online and drafting the site entirely in the public domain.  There are some attractive ones out there no doubt superior to my painstaking one. (more…)
